An extraordinary display celebrating the life of Joan Eardley, one of Scotland’s most popular twentieth-century artists. This celebratory two-room display at The Scottish Gallery of Modern Art marks 100 years since the birth of Eardley, who is widely regarded as one of the most influential painters of her generation.
The exhibition offers up insight into her working practice and focuses on her works produced in Catterline, the coastal village in Kincardineshire, where she worked from the early 1950s.
Soon after acquiring her first two-room cottage in the village, No 1 Catterline, she expressed satisfaction with her new surroundings:
It’s night – and the fire is giving a great, flickering light – and the lamplight too. It’s a great wee house... I’m sitting looking out at the darkness and the sea. I think I shall paint here. This is a strange place – it always excites me.”
Drawn from the National Galleries of Scotland’s collection, the display features 9 oil paintings, 11 works on paper, and a selection of photographs with archival materials. It includes some of Eardley’s most iconic paintings, such as Catterline in Winter (1963), Summer Fields (1961) and Snow (1958).
